چکیده

Purpose. To develop a mathematical tool for decomposition of comeal topographic data into comprehensive optical components. Methods. The polar data values arising from each mire of the TM>1 cornea1 topographer were separated into spherical (average power), regdar astigmatic (2’ harmonic), and non-regular astigmatic components (l’, 3’, and higher harmonics) by Fourier series analysis. Averages of these optical components were calculated for groups of normal, keratoconic, and transplanted eyes, and the best sphere-cylindrically conwted visual acuity was compared with the amount of non-regular astigmatism. Changes in topographic refractive components were compared with subjective refractive changes in eyes that had undergone myopic-astigmatic excimer laser ablation. Resulk. The topography of keratoconic and transplanted corneas were characterized by high amounts of non-regular astigmatic components, which correlated inversely and significantly with the best spherocylindrically corrected visual acuity. Fourier series analysis was found superior to conventional keratometry in predicting spherical and regular astigmatic changes in subjective refraction after myopicastigmatic excimer laser ablation. Conclusions. Fourier series analysis is a powerful tool to decompose the information of complex topographic comeal images into comprehensive optical components. Furthermore, Fourier series analysis results in a ZO-fold reduction in the data necessary for analysis and re-construction of colotir-coded topographic images.

Accuracy of Different Topographic Instruments in Calculating Corneal Power after Myopic Photorefractive Keratectomy

PURPOSE To compare the corneal power measurements obtained using different topographic instruments after myopic photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). METHODS Patients with myopia who were candidates for corneal refractive surgery were sequentially included. Pre-PRK and six months post-PRK corneal powers were measured using Javal manual keratometer, Orbscan II, Galilei, Tomey TMS4, and EyeSys 200...

Keratocyte apoptosis after corneal surgery.

PURPOSE Programmed cell death (apoptosis) is the controlled death of cells that occurs with minimal collateral damage to surrounding cells or tissue during development, homeostasis, and wound healing. The authors hypothesize the keratocyte apoptosis is an initiating factor in the wound-healing response after refractive surgical procedures. To evaluate the effects of different corneal manipulati...

Effects of optimized photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) operation on the asphericity and high-order aberration changes

Background: Optimized is a common and important method in which aberrations are created by the device and the surgeon, but high-grade aberrations are out of the surgeon's control and are induced by the device in the patient. The aim of this study was the evaluation of out-of-control high-order aberration changes before and after PRK surgery and these impact on vision outcome. Materials and meth...

Changes in posterior corneal elevations after combined transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy and accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking: retrospective, comparative observational case series

BACKGROUND To compare the changes in anterior and posterior corneal elevations after combined transepithelial photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and accelerated corneal collagen cross-linking (CXL) and after PRK. METHODS Medical records of 82 eyes of 44 patients undergoing either combined transepithelial PRK and CXL (PRK-CXL group) or transepithelial PRK (PRK group) were examined retrospective...

Analysis of the keratocyte apoptosis, keratocyte proliferation, and myofibroblast transformation responses after photorefractive keratectomy and laser in situ keratomileusis.

PURPOSE To test the hypothesis that (1) there are quantitative differences in the cellular responses in the corneal stroma after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for low myopia compared to high myopia and (2) there are both qualitative and quantitative differences in the cellular responses in the corneal stroma after PRK for high myopia and laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) for high myopia....
